There were 54 submissions in the Mobility Lot. The Buyers Group selected 21 to continue to Phase 1 of the AI4Cities PCP. The selected solutions vary from an optimization tool to address eco-efficient last mile delivery, to real-time air quality measurements, and a cycling management tool to make cycling safer and more attractive.
The cities participating in the AI4Cities Mobility challenge are: Amsterdam, Helsinki, Greater Paris, Stavanger and Tallinn. More information about the Mobility challenge can be found here.

Let’s take a cleaner breath! Citizens and city councils are more than ever ready to participate and adapt their behaviour and mobility policies towards a better, cleaner, and healthier life. Dynamic micro-regulation traffic management based on timely valid information on road pollution and emissions, as well as encouraging behavioural change, is key to sustainably reduce CO2 emissions, air pollution, and smooth pollution peaks in urban areas. Real-time traffic analysis and air pollution monitoring coupled with artificial intelligence can improve local traffic regulation and provide emission and pollution forecast to achieve sustainable outcomes. Designed by HOPU and Engineering, ATMOSPHERE offers a suite of dashboards with CO2 indicators related to mobility. These indicators are founded on predictive models based on real-time air quality measurements and AI to optimise traffic flows in cities and ports. Thus, it provides high-value green and innovative mobility services for citizens, companies, and public administrations and enhances the informed decision-making processes by simplifying the data.

AVENUE will develop an AI-based decision support tool for designing and monitoring shared mobility regulatory frameworks oriented towards the reduction of GHG emissions. AVENUE will exploit the information provided by two existing solutions: Populus’ Mobility Manager, which enables cities to gather the data that mobility operators share with authorities to manage the enforcement of regulatory measures, and Nommon’s Mobility Analytics Solution, which processes the registers from different types of mobile devices to provide actionable insights about people’s activity and mobility patterns. This information will be combined with other data sources to develop demand prediction models capable of simulating the modal choice process around shared mobility services and the way these modal choices can be influenced by regulatory strategies. The outcome of these models will serve to evaluate the carbon footprint effects of different possible measure.

CyCoCl – "Cycling: Collaborative, Clean and Clever" - is an individual and public cycling management tool, based on smart parameterisable real-time cycling navigation, seamlessly integrated, easily adjustable, and actively interacting with and within the digital and physical infrastructure of the given area. “CyCoCl” is a well-conceived but flexible concept, putting together collaborative routing technology NUNAV, exclusively provided by Graphmasters and empowered by artificial-intelligence-based service of ITK Engineering. Considering different types of individual needs, urban data and available infrastructure, CyCoCl will make cycling more safe and attractive. In doing so, it aims to inspire citizens to choose the bicycle more often and reduce CO2 emissions.

FranchetAI is an innovative data-driven and AI-based solution to help cities absorb traffic pollution, inspired by the Cotoneaster Franchetii, a super-plant recently acknowledged for filtering 20% more emissions. FranchetAI targets Smart Cities, concretely the municipalities and operators as well as travellers and citizens, to create awareness about their carbon footprint and engage them with proposals (both for the public space and the commuter habits) of more sustainable behaviours, leveraging explainable AI technology. Developed by 3 SMEs (Ubiwhere, 8Bells and Aavista), FranchetAI follows a user-centric approach to make data understandable by the different stakeholders.

The Twin4Impact Solution, developed by Insight Signals, is a user-centred Mobility Digital Twin, focused on users’ behaviour, their mobility choices and the quantification of resulting CO2 emissions at micro and macro scale. The solution would enable city stakeholders to better value new projects’ CO2 reduction impact, to increase their scaling potential, and more generally to provide cities with a holistic view of how their initiatives contribute to their carbon neutrality goals.

Active mobility such as shared e-scooters or city bikes can significantly reduce the travel time of certain itineraries when they are combined with public transport. However, depending on their availability and location, such intermodal itineraries are not always available, leading users to finally opt for their personal, more polluting car. The objective of the AI4Intermod project, developed by Instant System, is to design a tool that will suggest the optimal number and location of shared city bikes and e-scooters within a city to meet travellers' demand at any time of day.
